A unique aesthetic immersed in watercolor and detail

A unique aesthetic immersed in watercolor and detail

Filipe Silva's work highlights the experience of living in an island, in an authentic and unique way.

Filipe is an artist and designer from Funchal, the capital of Madeira island in Portugal. He designs buildings and interiors by day, and in parallel, he spends most of his free time drawing and painting. His artworks reflect the traditions, scenery, and experience of living in such a beautiful island. His work displays a distinct style, elegant use of color and an incredible level of detail.

In a digital era, where illustration software and digital tools are so commonly used, it's extremely satisfying to discover unique artwork, in the classical sense of art and drawing. Digital illustration has its place of course, and its efficiency is undeniable; but technology can also be limiting. The tools we use influence our process as well as the result. This explains why many contemporary illustrations look and feel so similar. There's something magical and beautiful about the traditional, authentic way of drawing; about real paint and textured paper. That’s the feeling we get when looking at Filipe's work.

Filipe has worked with various techniques and styles, but more recently he's been focusing on watercolor. His paintings are meticulous, ranging from small scale pieces to larger ones, where he portrays local neighborhoods, balcony's views, landscapes and city scenes, as well as beautiful figurative and abstract patterns, mostly monochromatic. The level of detail and craft are unbelievable. Filipe has a unique way of capturing and reimagining movement, light and volume. His work stands out as intricate, refined and very pleasant to the eye.
